Report 2 - Understanding Attendance: Implementing strategies with impact

Pupil absence remains a deep and ingrained challenge for many schools, without easy solutions.

To address this, ImpactEd Evaluation launched Understanding Attendance, a project helping schools and Trusts to identify the underlying drivers of pupil absence in their settings, and supporting them to assess the impact of their interventions.

This second report in the Understanding Attendance series presents new findings for the system, offering additional data and contextual information to enhance our understanding of attendance drivers. It spotlights case studies and resources that have been effective across the UK, drawing on attendance data from over 300,000 pupils and survey data from over 70,000 pupils over the course of the 23-24 academic year.

What's inside

Report 2 draws on findings from the 23-24 academic year, incorporating data on the drivers of pupil absence and emerging trends from schools who are making a sustained difference to pupil attendance.

The case studies in this report focus on four key themes for improving attendance:

  • Creating culture and embedding a sense of belonging
  • Building safety - paying attention to the physical and social environment of school
  • A relational and targeted approach to intervention
  • It’s everyone's job – developing a community around attendance

With over 350 schools part of Understanding Attendance, we are continuing to grow it to build the evidence on what works to address absence. To join, register your interest here.
